Under Louis XIV, Colbert had chosen this site in part for the quality of the nearby forests.  Oaks, elm, and other woods were available in quantity.  When possible, woods were taken that already bent to the forms needed for a ship.  In other cases complicated processes using hot sand and steam were needed to shape the woods for the new class of frigate.
