Lafayette, we are here!

Down the road just a short while, we enter the town of Rochefort.  It was under Louis XIII's son, Louis XIV that absolute monarchy came to its full maturity.  Not only did Louis XIV revoke his grandfather's Edict of Nantes, he also decided to build a navy that would rival that of his English rivals.  His minister Colbert traveled the coasts and chose this site, several kilometers up the Charente River for a large part of the project.  Here we pass by the royal rope works of this naval yard.
