Assault and Battery . . . NOT!

Our next stop is the Château de Talmont, one of the favorite resting places of Richard the Lion Hearted, who received it from the lands of his mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine.

The first military structure on this site dates to the 8th and 9th centuries when the Vikings threatened these shores.  It's no small irony that the 12th-century fortress would fall to Richard, himself a descendent of the Vikings through is great-great-grandfather William the Conqueror.
