To go with the strawberries, we have some of the fresh baked goods which are specialties of Vendée.  Within minutes these goodies are gone and we are back to work on our lessons.

We end the day with a detailed discussion of feudal society.  Quite different from the religious life we explored earlier this week, but in almost complete parallel, secular life in the Middle Ages was based military exploits and the titles won in battle.  The relation between lord and vassal was the key to a very complex set of behaviors, and the conflicts inherent in the system are key to the kind of military fortresses which have largely been destroyed in years since.  Tomorrow we will visit an example of this architecture -- one that Richard Lion-Heart used in defiance of his lord, King Philip Augustus of France.
