Our new material for today focuses on three major topics.  The first is the tides.  Understanding them is vital to this part of the world, whether you're a sailor, a farmer in the marshes, a saltmaker, or a visitor.  To illustrate the phenomena of tides I use a peach for the earth, an apricot for the moon, and a melon for the sun.  We thus learn why the sea rises and wanes, and why it does so with differing force each day.  For those who've had an astronomy class, this is just a vocabulary lesson.  For a few others, this is their first exposure to these ideas.
