The details of Eleanor's life are not really our object today, however.  The Abbey of Nieul is a magnificent example of the art that reigned in the days of Eleanor's birth -- the Romanesque.  The round arches, the heavy walls seeking the sky and the light despite their weight, the simple sculptures struggling to express the work of God -- these are the marvels of the Romanesque.  Today our guide is a magnificent spokeswoman for the grandeur of this simple place.
