Here at last!

May 24-26, 2001

The greatest and most famous of these battles took place just south of here in La Rochelle, which we will visit later with our students.  Richelieu also defeated the Protestants of Les Sables, and it was he who built the church of Notre Dame de Bon Port.  It seems that he chose the Gothic style in part to make it appear the the power of the Catholic Church was long established here in this western city.

Of course no important church is complete without its relics (usually parts of a saint's body or clothing).  Here we see the bones of Saint Fortuné, as they are exposed in the reliquary of Notre Dame de Bon Port.
