The International Studies Program was established in 1980 to provide undergraduate students in WVU's Eberly College of Arts and Sciences with knowledge of global affairs, to help them develop an understanding and appreciation of other cultures and societies, and to promote in their educations informed analysis of world interdependence. Today, the Program is the second-largest interdepartmental major in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. Between 1981 and 1994, 478 students were graduated with academic majors in International Studies. A further 54 majors were graduated in 1995, bringing the total to 532 graduates. For Arts and Sciences students who choose not to major in International Studies, in 1993 the Program added a formal minor.
Truly interdisciplinary in nature, the International Studies Program draws courses of study from 12 academic departments and programs; Economics, English, Foreign Languages, Geography, History, Humanities, Multidisciplinary Studies, Music, Political Science, Religious Studies, Sociology/Anthropology, and Technology Education/Women's Studies. An 11-member Interdepartmental Faculty Committee on International Studies oversees the Program and advises its Director and Associate Director.
