Appalachian Englishes

Appalachian Englishes is a term used to refer to varieties of English spoken in the Appalachian region of the eastern United States. For a governmental definition of Appalachia, please click here.

Most people unfamiliar with this region assume that there is a single variety, but in truth there is variation socially and geographically throughout the region.

The links to the right lead to a bibliography on Appalachian Englishes compiled by
James B. McMillan and Michael B. Montgomery. If you are aware of other items which should be on this list, please let us know.
