is a leather safety hat or Turtle Hat.
It probably dates from around 1890 or
1895. The hat is hard and black with
a carbide lamp on the front. It is irregularly
shaped with equal space and length between
the different grooves all the way around
the hat. These details show that this
particular hat is manufactured, not
homemade.
