Sterilizer

This is a Renwal Number 12 Sterilizer, used to disininfect medical tools in the 1920's through the 1950's. Medical tools were placed in the metal sifter and then lowered into liquid distinfectants. Glutaraldehyde was a widely used disninfectant. These solutions are highly corrosive and toxic. The moment an instrument is removed its sterility is compromised. Although chemical solutions were used, medical tools could also be placed in boiling water.

During the era of coal mining, doctors were employed through the mining companies. Employees could purchase medical services. Either a deduction would be made from their paycheck or they could pay in "Company Cash" alloted through the mining company. This particular disinfecting sterilizer was used by a doctor employed around the Scott's Run Area.
