Leather Hat

Homemade leather hats like the one below were common in the mines during the late nineteenth century. This one is most likely from the 1890s. The hat is hard and black, with a metal piece in front to hold a light. A leather strap is threaded through holes along the rim. The shape of the hat is a bit irregular, probably because it was made at home without a mold.
