Granville

(formally Grandville)
An act of the general assembly passed January 22, 1814, recited “that the lots and streets as already laid off on the Monongahela River, be established a town by the name of Grandville. Grandville was laid out by Captain Felix Scott, a son of pioneer Captain David Scott, for whom Scotts (Mill) Run was named. The first house in the town, it is said, was built by Felix Scott in 1812. He is also said to have started the first store, about the same time.

(Date? early 1800’s) Grandville, two miles below Morgantown, “contains 21 dwelling houses, one house of public worship free for all denominations, 1 common school, 3 mercantile stores, 2 taverns, 2 warehouses, 1 saddler, 1 smith shop, 2 cabinet makers, 2 boot and shoe factories, 1 cooper and 1 chair maker. Population, white males 44, females 56, colored 10—total 110—and 1 resident physician.”

A post office was set up in Grandville about 1830. It is has been speculated that there already was a post office in Virginia by the name of Grandville, so the “d” was dropped from the name. Others believe the “d” in Grandville was not pronounced and dropped over time.
