canvas hat below was typically of those
worn by miners ion the late 18th and early
19th centuries. It was a manufactured item,
and was probably purchased from the company
store. The hat offered little protection
from falling debris, but the head lamp that
would have proved helpful in the darker
recesses of a mine. It was contributed by
the West Virginia Jewelry and Loan.
