Grading/
Short Essay/ You will write a short essay, due by class time March 8 via email as rtf or word attachment to Sandy. The paper topic will develop from the reading and discussion of the first half of the course. We will brainstorm and workshop the paper prior to the due date. Paper format is 3 pages minimum (250 words min per page), not including works cited; 1" margins, double-spaced; with a title; checked for spelling and grammar; MLA format. Percentage of Grade/ 15% Long Essay/ The final essay is due by 6pm, May 5 via email as rtf or word attachment via email to Sandy. The paper topic will develop from the reading and discussion of the second half of the course. We will brainstorm and workshop the paper prior to the due date. The paper will require some research / reading in sources outside the course. Paper format is 5 pages minimum (250 word min per page), not including works cited; 1" margins, double-spaced; with a title; checked for spelling and grammar; MLA format. Percentage of Grade/ 30% MIX Posting/ The class electronic bulletin board available on MIX. You will post seven responses during the semester. I will post response prompts several days before the response is due. Responses are due by noon on the dates indicated on the schedule. Responses must be a minimum of one page (250 words). After posting your response, you must respond to at least one of your classmates’ postings. Responses will be graded for thoughtfulness, thoroughness, and relevance. You should try to make specific reference to the texts and other materials under discussion. Several other threads are set up for general discussion, and you are welcome to use these whenever you want. Percentage of Grade/ 7 postings x 5% = 35% Short Quizzes/ There will be two short quizzes, on Feb 2 and Apr 2. Both will be held in class, with open books. You will be asked to respond briefly to the class reading. Percentage of Grade/ 2 Quizes @ 5% = 10% Attendence and Participation/ Attendence is required. Any absence must be justified and documented; I will determine what counts as an excused absence. Also, see the University Policies page. Participation means arriving at class prepared and ready to work; responding to questions and engaging in discussion; working willingly and productively in groups; and, in general, maintaining a respectful and scholarly learning environment.
