Scholarship
As a scholar, I study language variation within communities and between
time periods. Technically, I am a quantitative sociolinguistic variationist.
I focus mostly on US dialects, specifically Southern English varieties.
Teaching
As a teacher, my primary goal is to teach people about how language works.
Most often, this takes place during Intro to Language classes where the
modern view of the mental grammar is key for comprehension. I also teach
how language varies over time in History of the English Language.
Service
In service of the community, I teach about the social and cultural value
of dialects, conduct dialect awareness programs, and perform as an expert
witness in legal cases.
